How to Follow Up on an Upwork Proposal Without Being Annoying

You sent the proposal four days ago. It was a good one — you spent time on it, it was specific to their job, you answered the screening questions. And nothing.

You check the job post. Still open. Still interviewing. They haven't closed it.

You want to follow up. But you also don't want to seem desperate, or pushy, or like someone who's going to be difficult to work with. So you do nothing. And eventually the job disappears.


First: is a follow-up even worth it?

Honest answer: sometimes, but less often than you'd hope. Here's the reality of what's happening on the client's side when you don't hear back:

  • They hired someone already and forgot to close the job

    A follow-up won't help here. The decision is made.

  • They're still reviewing and haven't gotten to you

    A follow-up might surface you at the right moment.

  • Your proposal wasn't strong enough to reply to

A follow-up is only useful in the second scenario. For everything else, the better use of your time is sending a stronger proposal to the next job.


When it makes sense to follow up

  • The job was posted recently (under 5 days ago)
  • The job post is still open and marked as 'interviewing'
  • You had a specific, strong proposal — not a generic one
  • You thought of something relevant after sending (a question, an example, a detail)

What a good follow-up looks like

The rule: add something new. A follow-up that just says "just checking in" or "still available if interested" adds nothing and signals desperation. A follow-up that adds value gives the client a reason to open it.

Follow-up that doesn't work

"Hi, just following up on my proposal from last week. I'm still very interested in the project and available to start immediately. Please let me know if you have any questions."

↑ Adds nothing. Client already knows you're interested — you sent a proposal. "Available immediately" signals desperation.

Follow-up that sometimes works

"Wanted to add one thing to my proposal — I noticed you mentioned the system needs to handle multiple time zones. ↑ Adds specific value. References something from their job post. Gives them a reason to respond even if they hadn't planned to.
